Help Promote Colon Cancer Awareness with the Click of a Button

Get Americans talking about colon cancer by lighting the White House up in blue.

Let’s turn the White House blue to raise awareness about colon cancer. March is colorectal cancer awareness month and the perfect time to unite and let our voices be heard!
Colon cancer is a disease no one wants to talk about, yet it is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. It is often beatable when detected and treated in its early stages or can be prevented altogether when polyps are removed before they develop into cancer.
Most people should begin screening for this disease at age 50, but if you have risk factors, including a family history of colon cancer or polyps, you need to be screened earlier. Find out your family history and be sure to talk with your doctor!

Save the Date!

We has such a great time with the tournament last year that we decided to put on another golf tournament/silent auction & dinner this year to raise money for ITOR, which is an institute tied to the hospital & the Cancer Center performing cancer research. Tim's oncologist, Dr. Edenfield, is currently putting together a new colon cancer research project for advanced colon & ovarian cancers that we are hoping to be able to help fund.

We're hoping to see you all on April 23rd at Greenville Country Club and if you aren't a golfer still go ahead & plan to be at the dinner where you can bid on lots of great stuff!

If you won't be available on April 23rd but still want to contribute in some way we're still looking for volunteers beforehand & the day of as well as for various donations so feel free to get in touch with me at jenny.clanton@gmail.com if you are interested!

Thank you all for all of your continued support & keep an eye out for more details to be released in the next week or two!

Any Volunteers?

Hi all,

We, along with some friends, are putting together another golf tournament this year to benefit a research project being put together by Tim's oncologist. Our ultimate goal is to raise $10,000 which may not actually be possible but we're going to try to see how close we can get to it. It's really just a drop in the bucket for what they need for the research but it makes us feel like we're making a little bit of a difference.

We're working on finalizing the date & location today and should have that information available on Tuesday at the latest. It's going to be a pretty accelerated time frame to put this on which is the reason for this post.

We are going to need a lot of help both leading up to the event & the day of for things such as:

- Gathering donations
- Signing up sponsors
- Promoting the event to the community
- Day of Volunteers

- Much, much more! (sounds fun right?)

Please let us know if you'd be willing to help, have any ideas of what to improve upon from last year or any great new suggestions for this year!

Quick Update

This week has been very bittersweet for us. Wednesday was the start of another treatment for Tim but it was also the 2 year anniversary of his original diagnosis. We're incredibly grateful that Tim is still here fighting and doing as well as he is although I'll be the first to admit that we both really wish the cancer was gone already.

We did find out that a friend Tim made through chemo passed away last night. Its so hard to hear when someone loses the fight but the fact that she was so young and had 3 kids makes the news even harder to stomach.

We also found out that one of Tim's numbers jumped a bit (and not in a good way). Its not enough for us to worry about yet but enough for us to keep a pretty close eye on. For our part it means we will be getting strict about lowering our sugar, meat & dairy intake and upping the exercise. We tend to get slack every so often so we might as well get back into everything. Tim is even starting to learn to like mushrooms due to our lifestyle changes! :)

Hope everyone is doing well and enjoying this nice weather we've had lately!

Beginning of a New Year

I feel like I am starting every new blog post with the sentence: "I am sorry for not updating this in a long time", but it is true. Things have been pretty quiet around the Bright household here recently. We were here in Greenville for Christmas and then went to San Francisco with Jenny's family on Christmas day and got back on New Years day at 2:00 am. It was my first trip to San Fran and it was an amazing place to visit. I have to say that I am now obsessed with wine more than I have ever been. We layed low on New Years day trying to recover from the early morning arrival back in town and to rest up for the big Carolina win and even BIGGER Clemson loss. (Sorry I had to put that jab in there)

Since we went to San Fran at that time I was able to have a 2 week break in treatment. The longest break since July 4th this past year. We are hoping that my numbers can stay where they are to give me more breaks like this in the future.

We've also been getting some awesome comments & I got to read some great letters from the class of a friend of ours. She's a middle school teacher and is using the blog as an example of overcoming adversity so some of her kids have visited. Well the first day we got the best comment ever, Jenny called me to tell me about it but was laughing too hard at first. The comment said: "You're life is so sad :(" we both got a great laugh out of that one but its been really cool to read some of their essays. They are all really thoughtful & I'm glad to know that my story is helping to inspire some of them.

I also wanted to let everyone know that we are in the process of putting together another golf tournament for this year. We have a date in mind but nothing is set in stone yet, so stay tuned and for all of the information. BrightLife is in a good place right now and this year we have decided to have all of the money raised at the golf tournament go towards a study being done by my Oncologist Dr. Jeff Edenfield to help find a cure for Colon Cancer. We're really excited to be able to get to do this & hope everyone has just as much fun as they did last year. If anyone has any suggestions about things we can improve on from last year or ideas of things we can put into this year or wants to help out with everything just let us know.

Overdue Thanks

It may be a few days after Thanksgiving but today is still a pretty big day for us as it has now officially been 365 days since Tim was rediagnosed & our world was sent spinning yet again. This time it seemed like the spinning was even more out of control than the first and we were feeling pretty lost for awhile. Today, though, we get to celebrate that Tim is still here, still strong & still fighting. It has not been an easy year for us in a multitude of ways but we've managed to make it through thanks to so many wonderful people.

I realized this past week that although we've mentioned some of incredible acts of kindness we've seen over the past year, I don't think we've really stepped back to thank everyone as we should. There have been so many people that have helped in so many different ways, some without even realizing just how much their actions meant to us. From both of our companies & the employees of each stepping out way above & beyond anything we could've imagined to our friends, family & neighbors who have made sure we are well cared for in every imaginable way to the strangers who have provided random acts of kindness through a thoughtful word or gesture and finally all of the caregivers who have become like a second family to us over these past 2 years.

There really are no words to tell you all how much we appreciate everything, I guess that's why its taken us so long to even try, we've been searching for the words to let you know how much it all means & just how blown away we've been but there really are none that do any justice. So please just know that you have changed us & our lives for the better.

We still have an incredibly long way to go, and we know there will be lots of ups & downs ahead but please know just how incredibly grateful we are each day to know how strong of a support system we have behind us.

Number 32

Let me first start this blog off by saying sorry that I havent written anything in a while. Things have been pretty quiet around my household so there really hasnt been much to talk about. But I am here currently at the Cancer Center getting a treatment and got a bit of good news here today so I thought that I would pass it along. My CEA has been dropping over the past 6 - 7 treatments and we found out today that it has gone from 4 to 3.4. Which means that I am almost normal again. We still have a ways to go but it was nice to hear such a big drop when I got here today.

This past weekend Steven got invited to play Sage Valley on Saturday and was able to take a guest with him. I was the lucky guest that got to go. This was my second trip down there and it was just as much fun as the first. It is such a great golf course and it is really fun to play with a caddy. I didnt put the ball very well but it was still a great trip. We stayed overnight Saturday after the golf in one of the cottages that they have on site and it was really nice. We were able to watch Carolina lose and then watch the Bama vs LSU game also. We got to meet some great people and had a lot of fun.

I am hopefully going to finish this treatment with ease and then will be able to head down to Columbia to watch USC vs Florida on Saturday. I hope that everyone has a great week.
Tim
